Historical Landmarks

Memorial Center on Grandview Road.  A community project dedicated as a living memorial to the boys who lost their lives in the service of their country during World War II and to Mary Sue Berry Cobb for her faithful community service.

Robinson Springs United Methodist Church on Main Street.  One of the oldest churches in the area, the sanctuary was completed in 1845.  The hand-hewn pews, wooden cross behind the altar, ornately carved altar rail, and slave gallery are maintained in their original condition.

Historical Homes.  When driving around the Millbrook area you are bound to see some of the area’s most beautiful plantation style homes. Some of the best known historical homes include the following.  Millbrook’s history began around 1818 when Bolling Hall, a friend of William Wyatt Bibb, built Ellerslie, the first permanent home in the area. This one and a half story house with large verandas was the first to have glass windowpanes in the Alabama territory.  Thornfield, the area’s second permanent home, was built by Archibald McKeithen.  Today, this home is hidden by trees with no part visible from the road except the stone columns that mark the entrance where a sign bears its name.  The Elms, built in 1836 by Absalom Jackson, is the largest remaining home of that era still standing today.  The home is two- story with Egyptian and Greek architectural influences.  The Elms operated as a cotton plantation for 100 years and covered 16,000 acres.  Across the street from The Elms is the Jackson-Marvel house.  This house dates back to 1890 and has been fully restored.  These homes are not open to the public.

Confederate War Memorial.  This impressive but somber monument, located on the corner of Main Street and Monument Drive, is a reminder of Millbrook’s southern heritage.

William Wyatt Bibb Cemetery.  Mr. Bibb became Alabama’s first governor in 1819.  At 39, he was thrown from a horse in his plantation and four months later died from the fall.  He is buried in the family cemetery at Coosada.

In the Coosada Town Hall there is an impressive display of Indian artifacts and arrowheads found in the area.  Locating next to the Alabama River, the Indians of “Coosawda” lived peaceably in the area for many years.
